RTI explained: the FPS and EPS

Real Time Information means telling HMRC about pay every time you run payroll. Here is what each submission is for.

This guide covers payroll in the UK. You are viewing Nobicel for Ghana — see the guides for Ghana.

What RTI is

Under Real Time Information, you report pay and deductions to HMRC each time you pay employees, rather than once a year. HMRC uses these reports to keep tax codes, benefits and State Pension records up to date.

Full Payment Submission (FPS)

An FPS is sent on or before every payday. It lists each employee paid, what they were paid and what was deducted. New starters and leavers are reported on it too, so it is how HMRC learns that someone joined or left.

Employer Payment Summary (EPS)

An EPS is only needed in some months: to reclaim statutory payments such as maternity or paternity pay, to claim the Employment Allowance, or to tell HMRC that you paid no employees in a tax month. It is due by the 19th of the following tax month.

Getting it right

Nobicel prepares the FPS from each approved pay run and an EPS when you need one, so you review and approve rather than build them by hand.

  • Send the FPS on time: late filing can lead to penalties
  • Correct mistakes on your next regular FPS where you can
  • Make sure every employee’s NI number, date of birth and address are recorded
  • Keep payroll records for at least three years after the tax year they relate to

This guide is general information for UK employers, not legal or tax advice. Rates and thresholds change each tax year, so check current guidance on GOV.UK before acting on it.
