Taking on a new employee in the UK

The checks, paperwork and payroll steps for a new starter, from right to work to their first payslip.

This guide covers payroll in the UK. You are viewing Nobicel for Ghana — see the guides for Ghana.

Before they start

  • Check their right to work in the UK, and keep a record of the check
  • Give them a written statement of employment particulars on or before day one
  • Collect their bank details, address, date of birth and National Insurance number

Setting up payroll

Ask for their P45 from their last job. If they do not have one, they complete HMRC’s starter checklist instead, which tells you which tax code to use. Add them to payroll and report them on your Full Payment Submission the first time you pay them.

Pensions

Assess them for auto-enrolment from their first day. If they are eligible, you must enrol them and write to them about it within six weeks of their start date (or of becoming eligible).

In Nobicel

New starters can complete their own details through the employee portal. Nobicel checks for missing information such as an NI number before their first run, and includes them on the next FPS.

This guide is general information for UK employers, not legal or tax advice. Rates and thresholds change each tax year, so check current guidance on GOV.UK before acting on it.
